Before/After: Styling My Dresser

dresser styling-27.jpg

My dresser is broken (the drawers are busted beyond repair) and I’ve been telling myself that when I buy a new dresser, I’ll finally style this bedroom wall nicely. But here we are 2 years living in the Hobbit House and I still haven’t bought a new dresser! I have my eye on some beautiful high quality options, but they’re expensive and I simply can’t afford to invest in a big piece of furniture right now. That being said, I decided it was time to stop making excuses when it came to styling this nook. Let’s live in the present! So last week with the help of Eddie, I finally decorated this part of our bedroom.

Yowza look at that mess! I snapped this pic as I was beginning to take clothes out of the drawers to organize. As you can see, the drawers are see-through, a feature my future dresser will 100% not possess - ha! The dresser itself looks cluttered and the wall is empty. You can see the command strips we used for the wall laying on the bed.

I own a lot of hats, and I’ve been wanting to hang a few of them in the bedroom for a while now. Firstly, to free up room in the closet where they’re stacked, and second, because they’re beautiful and look so cool displayed! So Eddie measured and marked on the wall where we would hang command strip hooks. The first two were hung perfectly, but the third hook gave us problems. Even with all the measuring, it ended up going up just a hair too low. When Eddie tried to take it off the wall to move the hook up a bit, it took a chunk of the wall off with it! I had to leave the room I was so horrified!!! So if you go the command strip route, be extra careful. Luckily Eddie was able to fix it, phew.

My dress closet! Also where I keep my sandals, heels, and a portion of my bag collection.

I’ve had a wooden shelf under my bed from a project that never came to fruition, and I realized the width of the shelf matches my dresser perfectly. So to create a bit of height, I simply placed the shelf on top of the dresser, towards the back next to the wall. I also swapped out the previously cluttered looking art for the horizontal version of my Nature Boy print (from the Black & Blooms print shop!)

To the left of the dresser is my sweater/jacket/kimono/blouse closet. It’s where I keep the rest of my shoes and a selection of smaller woven bags too.

I’ve been wanting to purchase a cute little table lamp for the bedroom, as all we have is our ceiling light and it’s a bit too bright at night. I love the cozy glow of a lamp, so I bought this sweet handmade ceramic one. I love the flower print, and how cool is that shade?!

To style the dresser top I incorporated neutral pieces with natural materials and fun textures. Lots of little drop zones for my jewelry, and of course multiple candles for that warm twinkly glow.

My Spanish moss has been hanging in the kitchen, but I thought it would go perfectly in here instead. It’s being held together by a small wire and I mounted it on the wall by looping the wire over a simple pushpin. Easy peasy! Spanish moss is a bromeliad and very easy to care for. Since it isn’t planted in soil, you simply hold it running water or submerge it in a bowl of water, then let it dry.

How cool is this mirror with the crystal base? It was a gift from a friend, I just love how it looks.

To make the drawers less see-through, I covered the inside with white towels attached with double stick tape. Sometimes you gotta work with what you have! It’ll do for now, until the day we upgrade this dresser.

The snake plant in the honeycomb planter had been living in another corner of the bedroom, but I love how it looks here next to the dresser. A much needed pop of greenery and color to the wall! Placing my basket hamper on the other side of the dresser helped to round out the space. Amazing how a few simple changes can completely transform a nook, right?
